WordPress is one of the world's most popular website platforms, powering everything from blogs to eCommerce websites, and everything in between. Its popularity can be attributed to its flexible and user-friendly content management system (CMS), making it a great choice for businesses of all sizes.
If you’re working with a trusted partner, like Adtrak, to support your WordPress site, you will need to grant access via a user account. Below is a quick guide on how to add a new user securely and efficiently.
User Roles in WordPress
Before adding a new user, it's important to understand the different roles available in WordPress. Each role comes with a specific set of permissions to help you control who can do what on your site.
- Administrator
Full access to the site, including users, plugins, themes, and settings. - Editor
Can create, edit, publish, and delete any posts or pages. - Author
Can create, edit, and publish their own posts, but cannot modify others’ content. - Contributor
Can write and edit their own posts but cannot publish them. An editor or admin will need to review and publish on their behalf. - Subscriber
Has access only to their own profile. Typically used for sites with user logins or member areas.
How to Add a New User to Your WordPress Site
To grant access to your WordPress site, follow these steps:
- Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard.
- In the left-hand menu, navigate to Users > Add New.
- Fill in the required fields:
- Username (this cannot be changed later)
- Email address
- Choose the appropriate User Role from the dropdown menu.
- Tick the box to Send the new user an email about their account.
- Click Add New User.
The new user will receive an email with login instructions, and their access will be immediately active according to the role you've assigned.
If you're unsure which role is appropriate or require assistance with the setup, please contact us. We're happy to advise on the access we require and how to grant it.
By managing user roles carefully, you’ll maintain site security while giving the right people the tools they need to help your website thrive.
